4TH LALISA CONFERENCE, WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, BELLINGHAM, WA, APRIL 11-12, 2019
We are honored to welcome Jon Beasley-Murray as our keynote speaker to this year’s LALISA conference. Jon Beasley-Murray is associate professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. His research interests include social, cultural, and political theory, as well as Latin American studies. His book Posthegemony: Political Theory and Latin America was published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2010. In reviewing the book for the journal MLN (2012), Charles Hatfield called Posthegemony “a book of major theoretical importance and profound political and disciplinary implications." Jon Beasley-Murray also has a very active presence online through his two blogs: Posthegemony, a blog about cultural studies and the concept of hegemony; and Projections, a blog about the representation of Latin America in Hollywood and European cinema.

Arriving in Bellingham
Whether you are arriving in Bellingham by plane, train, or car, here are some suggestions to help you navigate the city and our campus.
Off-campus Parking: You can park off campus in the Lincoln Creek Transit Center (LCTC) Park & Ride. The Park & Ride is located right off Interstate 5 and it is the university’s commuter parking lot. Parking in the Park & Ride costs $5 per day. You can pre-pay using WWU’s Parking portal (https://wwuparking.t2hosted.com/cmn/index.aspx) and print your parking pass prior to your arrival to display in your car. If you pay using the university’s parking portal, be sure to purchase a permit for the two days you will be here. There is also an automated pay station at the lot that you can use to pay with cash or credit card. Alternately, you may download the Parkmobile app (https://www.wwu.edu/parking/parkmobile.shtml) and pay directly from your smartphone.
Three bus routes (80S, 92, 190S) will take you directly from the LCTC Park & Ride to our campus (Haggard Hall bus stop)*. The bus will drop you off across the street from the Viking Union, where all our panels will take place. Bus service costs $1 each way. Buses run every 10-12 minutes and take about 10 minutes to get to campus.
*As you board the bus, you can ask the driver if the bus is coming to campus, if you are unsure. When you get off, have them point out the Viking Union to you. You will board your return bus on the opposite side of the street.

On-campus Parking at the Visitors’ Lot: You can park on campus in one of our visitor lots. These are known as the C lots and are located on the south end of campus. These cost $10 per day. You may pay using one of the automated pay station at the lot. You can pay with cash or credit card. Alternately, you may download the Parkmobile app (https://www.wwu.edu/parking/parkmobile.shtml) and pay directly from your smartphone.
Please note that the C lots are located within a 10- to 15-minute walk to the Viking Union. Be sure to print out the attached map to help you navigate our campus.
On-campus Parking at the Viking Union Lot: You can access the Viking Union (VU) directly through North Garden street. The parking lot next to the Viking Union (VU) is lot 6V. Parking in lot 6V is $2 per hour, but you may purchase a day pass for $12. There is an automated pay station at the lot that you can use to pay with cash or credit card. Alternately, you may download the Parkmobile app (https://www.wwu.edu/parking/parkmobile.shtml) and pay directly from your smartphone.
Be aware that this is a very small parking lot with limited spaces. See the attached map for its location, as well as for directions for getting to the other visitors’ parking lot on campus (Lot C) in the event that you find no spaces are available.

Unfortunately, there is not a bus route that services the university directly from the Amtrak station. However, at the Amtrak station you can board bus route 1 and ask the driver to drop you off on the corner of North State St. and Cedar St. Bus service costs $1 each way. This is the closest stop to our campus as it is only a short uphill walk to the Viking Union.
